Ryan Yip is a second-year Master's student at the University of Michigan’s School for Environment and Sustainability, specializing in Environmental Justice, Policy, and Sustainable Systems. He holds a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science with a minor in Biology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
As an early-career professional with a strong interest in the clean and renewable energy sector, focusing on community engagement, policy advocacy, and law, Ryan’s capstone project is dedicated to advancing energy sovereignty through technical analysis and community participation in Hawaii.
In parallel with his academic coursework, he actively pursues early career opportunities. He serves as the Project Lead and Data Analyst Co-Lead in the Student Energy Career Training Program, where he conducts research on global sustainable workforce strategies and analyzes government policies in North America that support workforce transitions in clean energy.
Outside of work, Ryan is an advocate for climate action. He co-founded the Hong Kong-based climate advocacy group "Climate Sense," engaging youth in global climate conferences, including COP27 and COP29.

Here are people’s comments on my passion and experience in the climate & sustainability space!
“I was in the same Catalyst Leadership Circle (CLC) Fellowship with Ryan at the University of Michigan. Ryan consistently demonstrated preparedness during both practice and actual presentations. He walked us through Traverse City’s potential energy coaching program, which I thought was comprehensive but also easily digestible for residents in Travers City. He demonstrated high levels of empathy and understanding toward his colleagues. I cannot recommend Ryan enough. He is ready to partake and lead in public-facing energy projects.” — Nyasha Milanzi, CLC Fellow (via LinkedIn)
“Ryan is a talented and determined man who has taken it upon himself to raise awareness about the significance of climate actions. Ryan has shown exceptional leadership abilities, frequently organizing events and activities that promote climate education. Ryan’s commitment to climate education is very encouraging. He is continually looking for new information and learning chances, and he is always willing to share his knowledge. His energy is contagious, and he has a unique ability for inspiring others to take action and make a difference. — Joseph Chan, former Deputy Director at Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development Office, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (via LinkedIn)
“Ryan is an awesome teacher who consciously creates space for everyone so you can learn a lot from him! We have a smaller group that plans to meet on Thursdays at 7 pm at IM which will be beginner friendly if you want to join.” — Volleyball Friend
What I find the most interesting and useful in the Coffee Chat Session is that Ryan’s suggestion to contact professors and “never reject myself before others reject me.” — Mentee
